I do not have to believe anything. I have read The Okinawa Program book
written by the Okinawan centenarian study lead scientists (Willcox, Willcox
& Suzuki). The book is based on their studies. They know what the diet of
the Okinawan centenarians looks like. These Okinawan centenarians eat less
than *2*% meat, eggs and dairy daily (pork is consumed mainly in
festivities) - very little. Tofu and fish each account 11-12% of the diet
(page 71). These amounts are by weight. Read the book and you'll know more.

Well nearly everything I have read mentions that pork is a huge, huge part
of their diet. |

There is no evidence that it is a healthy long-term eating pattern. No one
does know the effects of low-carb diets to mortality in long term. At the
moment the longest lived populations are eating diets which are quite low in
protein, like the Okinawan elders or the vegetarian Seventh Day Adventists.

Aren't protein-rich soy preparations a substantial part of the foods SDA
adherents substitute for animal protein? I seem to recall that being
true of the SDA folks in my extended family a few decades ago. Do you
have figures the actual protein intake of Adventists these days?

With Japan's notoriously hot and sultry summer now in full swing,
pork producers are once again calling on Japanese consumers to eat
more of the meat in order to fight natsubate -- the loss of physical
strength due to the high humidity and searing temperatures.

[Literally, "summer exhaustion"]
| Quote: | Pork worked wonders, they said, because it contained a high
concentration of vitamin B-1 which, among other things, helped to
combat fatigue. In fact, pork is said to contain 15 times more B-1
than beef and 12 times more than chicken and is also rich in other
B-group vitamins.

When I lived in Japan in the 1960s a young researcher from the Japanese
Agriculture Ministry (I've long since forgotten the exact name) dropped
by my house occasionally to pick up a little more English. He was part
of a group researching lower-fat hogs that had been developed in, IIRC,
Norway or Sweden and studying the feasibility of importing the strain to
Japan. Obviously this emphasis on the use of pork is not all that
recent a development in the Japanese diet.

I have read about the macronutrient composition of vegetarians in general,
but I did not find any specific data about protein intake of SDA's from
Medline. However, in the guidelines on the site below SDA's are guided to
keep their protein intake between 10 and 15 percent of energy. That would
denote adequate but quite low protein intake.

| Glutamine - Glutamine or L-Glutamine, a free-form amino acid, can be converted to glutamic acid. Glutamic acid is a precursor to the important inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA (gamma amino butyric acid). L-Glutamine also plays an important role in ammonia disposal.
